Helen Veale
Creative Director
Helen Veale is co-founder and Creative Director of Outline. Recent successes include three series of “Remarkable Places to Eat” for BBC2, now in production with a fourth series for More 4 and Channel 4, three series of “Sarah Beeny’s New Life in the Country”, Series 1 of which was Channel’s 4’s most watched 8.00pm new factual launch of 2020, and Food Network’s hit series “Michel Roux’s French Country Cooking”. Helen was the Executive Producer of BBC’s BAFTA nominated, social experiment series “No more Boys and Girls” and Channel 4’s critically acclaimed, and Grierson nominated documentary “Things We Won’t Say About Race (That Are True)” written and presented by Trevor Phillips.
Before starting Outline, Helen produced and directed current affairs and journalism-led popular factual programming. Her aim for the company was to engage audiences who might not come to traditional factual TV with programmes that combine strong story-telling and with real entertainment value, so she teamed up with Laura Mansfield who shared that vision and had great track record as an entertainment producer.
Helen has served on the Cultural Diversity Network Industry Steering Group and Project Diamond Advisory Panel and is always keen to look for ways to make it easier for people from diverse back grounds to get into TV and to progress in their careers. She was on the Edinburgh TV Festival Advisory Committee from 2007 to 2012 and produced sessions focussing on diversity, inclusion, and anti-bullying in the industry. She also won the 2010 Last Laugh stand-up comedy contest at the TV Festival – and since they never did this contest again, she remains officially the funniest TV producer in the UK.
"When I was little I didn’t know anyone who worked in telly or even really that TV jobs existed. I actually thought that the end credits were a lottery and if you watched long enough you would eventually see your name on the list. So it’s incredibly important to me that Outline is a place people from any kind of background feels welcome and get the chance to make shows they are proud of and to have fun while they do it."
