Bracknell News – “Best Dishes” TV chef Tom Kerridge joins our search for Berkshire’s Best Young Chef

Tom Kerridge, star of BBC2’s Proper Pub Food and owner of two Michelin star Hand & Flowers, in Marlow, is one of the top chefs on the judging panel of the second Berkshire’s Best Young Chef Competition, launched by The Observer and East Berkshire College.

Mr Kerridge, said: “I am pleased to be able to support East Berkshire College’s new Hospitality & Catering Academy and Berkshire’s Best Young Chef Competition. This is a chance for me to give something back and inspire the next generation of chefs.

“I started cooking at a young age, but I didn’t realise it was the career for me until I went to catering college and got an evening job in a kitchen. Having the right attitude and working hard is the key to succeeding in this industry. You have to love what you do!”

The masterchef-style contest is open to anyone aged 12-19 living in Berkshire with this year’s competition split into two age categories, 12-15 and 16-19.

For a second year, Mr Kerridge will be joined on the judging panel by award-winning pastry chef Will Torrent and Observer editor Tim Cole.

The finalists will go head to head in a live cook-off at Langley College, in Station Road, on Monday, October 13.

To enter, talented young chefs must create their own starter, main course or dessert using whatever ingredients they wish and email details and a photograph of their dish.

Budding chefs must be able to make their dish from scratch in 90 minutes on their own and the cost of ingredients should not exceed £20.

Judges will be looking for creativity, presentation and cooking skills. The closing date for entries is midnight on Monday, August 11.

As well as being crowned ‘Berkshire’s Best Young Chef 2014’, the winner in each category will get the chance to go behind-the-scenes at the prestigious Oakley Court Hotel, in Windsor, where they will see how a professional kitchen runs and receive a masterclass from the hotel’s head chef, which will be followed by a complimentary three-course meal in the hotel’s award-winning restaurant with their parents.

They will also win a collection of baking accessories worth more than £75, thanks to Sainsbury’s Uxbridge Road store and The Pampered Chef.

In addition, the winner of the 12-15 age category will receive a signed copy of Will Torrent’s new book Chocolate at Home and a 5kg bar of the finest Belgian chocolate from Callebaut. While, the winner of the 16-19 category will also receive a complimentary meal for them and their parents at the Hand & Flowers, and a signed cookbook courtesy of Tom Kerridge. Runners-up will each receive a signed celebrity cookbook.
